On Night Mountain. 墨翠 reads black indoors and turns deep green the moment a torch is held behind it. In a collection named for cloud, it is the piece that stands for what the cloud is hiding — 玄, the dark that is not empty.
What To Look For
Read the water first
Hold a Cloud piece against a window rather than a lamp. Daylight travels further into icy jadeite and shows you the true depth — the point at which the stone stops being transparent and starts being green.
Faint white threads and cotton-like clouds are not flaws. They are the record of how the stone formed, and in icy material they are what gives a piece its weather.
